Despite investigations showing that steroids are incredibly pervasive in major league baseball, to the extent that it is discussed casually and drugs are used openly, the powerful Major League Baseball Players Association has increased initiatives to ban steroid-users among baseball players for years. Some of the greatest baseball stars in the past 20 years have been named as steroid-users.

This has resulted in a backlash by those trying to preserve the integrity and sportsmanship of Major League Baseball. Former U.S. Senator George Mitchell called steroid-using baseball stars “drug cheats” and recommended more stringent testing for performance-enhancing drugs. He noted that steroid use “exposed players to serious health risks and threatened to corrupt the integrity of baseball itself”.

Not believing in your talent. As hard as it is to believe I see many high school baseball players that should be playing in college but do not think they are good enough. Sometimes recruiting comes down to who wants it more once athletes reach a certain talent level.

Giving up during the recruiting process. Getting a scholarship is hard work. Many times athletes who are used to success are not prepared for the brutal nature of earning a scholarship. Those who can press forwards after being turned down by school after school are the ones who win in the end.

There have been players who have been banned from the Hall of Fame, such as Pete Rose, who bet on baseball when he was manager for the Reds. But for steroid users, the boundaries seem to be more blurry. If they are allowed into the Hall of Fame, it would almost be like condoning steroid use, something that the Major League Baseball Players Association has already been guilty of doing for years.

Remember how Ken Griffey Jr. used to stand in his stance in his prime (almost straight up with his legs close together). He was very comfortable this way, and then when he went to swing the bat, his step was much larger so that he attained a wider, more balanced final position.

Not being flexible. We are talking about being able to touch your toes here. College coaches want athletes who can play multiple positions. If you want the scholarship be willing to play and be able to play around the field.

Remember, these are just 5 critical mistakes I have seen and continue to see every year. Start your recruiting process early to get a baseball scholarship and treat it like a job
